This thimble was installed in 2004. The store is long gone, so I can ask them for ID. Does anyone know what brand this is? I see the Duravents seem to be all square these days, so it's probably another brand. When this install was done, it was for single wall pipe. My understanding is an adapter is needed if I want double wall there in most cases. The double wall pipe does slide nicely right over the exposed 2" of stainless steel, so I'm not even sure I need an adapter. Also, I noticed that spot of rust while I was taking that pic. Does this sucker need to be replaced anyway, hence no need for all these ID questions?

In a nutshell, need ID and what adapter I would need for double wall. 6" pipe.

thanks all.

Do you have a picture of the chimney cap?

Its either ventis or Excel. The trim on the thimble doesn't look like any ventis I have used so I am thinking Excel. And no different adapter is needed for double wall pipe

That horizontal pipe run inside looks very flat. It should be pitched upward toward chimney by at least 1/4 inch per foot. This prevents cold smokey start ups inside and increases draft.

I already have too much draft, but that does give some insight on why my cold starts are tricky. I'm taking the bottom damper out soon, so if the new piece is slightly shorter, that should accomplish the 1/4" per foot easily.

If the adapter is the same no matter what. how does it attach to the existing thimble. I know to slide the stainless adapter through the decorative plate and slide the whole thing into the opening, but how does it attach? Self tapping screws? All the kits I've seen seem to have pre-drilled holes.

So just slide the double wall over the stainless part that sticks out and that's it? The double wall pipe is Duravent and seems to recommend a specific adapter for attaching the pipe to the thimble. I don't need that? Honestly it's been set up and running like that for years, so I know it works fine, but just wanted to make sure I didn't make an error I will eventually regret.

Is that rust spot anything to be worried about?

I don't work with duravent other than cleaning some that's already there so I don't know

So here's a few pics of the chimney cap. Any leads as to what this is would be greatly appreciated. I went to one store today who told me I have to use the adapter for this brand and no other. My stove pipe is duravent, so it's either find the correct adapter for this thimble.

If I keep hitting a dead end on this, how big of a job is it to change whatever this thimble out for a Duravent? I'm assuming it's just a different through the wall kit and has nothing to do with the corresponding class A chimney?

I don't understand what the issue is. The chimney clearly already has a stovepipe adapter on it. It has pipe attached to it. You just need the proper duravent part to attach to the chimney. What is wrong with how it's attached now?

And again that is either ventis or Excel chimney.

That's not an adapter. It's just the male side of a telescoping pipe. It's just resting on the wall thimble in the same way that single wall would be. I can't drive screws through double wall without piercing both layers of the pipe and would also have to drill through the stainless steel. My understanding is the adapter would attach to the black part of the thimble itself and then the double wall either just snap locks in or is screwed into the adapter.

The SS on the Duravent adapter would occupy the same space as what is there now. Both cannot exist at the same time unless i'm missing something. I take some pics later in the week. I have to take it apart to clean anyway.

If this is Excel chimney then the part looks like it might be their flue extention, part #EX.

Yes that's how it works you drill through them all and screw it fast. As long as it's a tight fin there is nothing wrong with that

The adapter or the end of the pipe will slide over the chimney adapter and be screwed fast

That might be what I need. This looks like what's there now. Looks like what you posted sits over this ventis pic and then i have an easier way to screw it down.

You don't need anything else on the chimney side of it. You may need a different duravent part to adapt to the chimney part

okay. So no need to worry about that rust spot?
Possibly I can't tell how bad it is. But you have to at the least figure out where the water came from that caused that
