Burning Hunk

Sitting here with a nice blister forming on my hand, Seems like no matter how careful I am I always seem to burn myself at least once each season. Am I just an idiot or does this come with the territory?

Sounds like you may be candidate for a set of stove gloves.

Second stove gloves.

With a side loader that I have you need long stove gloves. I know!

Get some gloves that well up the forearm. Burns from the stove can be bad bc of the high heat.

Stove gloves. I usually get 2-3 + years out of mine.

We heat hot water on the stove for showers. Lets just say when carrying a pot of almost boiling water while naked and just wearing gloves can lead to a burn that will get your attention.
You are hardcore brother. I have a desire to live more "simpler" but I think heating water on the stove everyday for a shower would get old. I tip my hat to you.

You need a different kind of protective “glove” for what you’re describing.

I use welders gloves. They last 2 years or so and are pretty cheap to grab online. I can reach in and move a burning log no problem and have very little fear of knicking the stove with my sub l skin...except that one time. I have a good burn scar on the inside of my forearm exactly 1/4" from where the gloves end lol. That one hurt.

Also just be careful the gloves don't get wet from kids boots or anything wet drying near the stove. If they are wet and you reach in there the water almost instantly turns to steam and will burn the crap out of your hand.

I currently have these:

Any decently thick leather gloves would work.

For the guy carrying boiling water, I hope you have long enough arms to ensure the treasures are above the splatters...

Seems like we all got those tattoos over the years. Mine was from reading where everyone said those welders gloves or harbor freight were just as good, um BS, they're way shorter than normal and I got a good zinger, you wanna know how I know, OUCH!!!

I'm in my second year. I burned myself a couple times my first season and that is because I was reloading too soon. I let the coals burn way down now. Still enough for fast restart but not nearly hot enough that I'm able to be burned. I get longer burns now and it's safer.

The act of putting on the gloves is going to make you think about what you are doing. If you keep an out for any hot spots on the gloves it will hopefully train you to avoid hot places. One other key tool is a "poking stick". I do not think its worth buying a commercial one, usually best impromised on what you had around. My poking stick for my boiler reached to the back of the boiler and is a 3/16" steel road with a 90 degree 2" bend on the end.

I can't recall burning myself in the woodstove. Any time I burn myself with fire is in the summer playing with the chiminea. That of course normally has a few adult beverages involved!

I’ll get a kiss once a year or so. Almost always when I’m reloading while half asleep because we need more heat due to overly cold weather.

Likewise. Hasn't happened this year... yet.

Iv managed to stay clear of any burns this year... so far.. I use stove gloves, up to my elbow.. and normally a long sleeve shirt. I have gotten a kiss here and there mostly when im rushing and dont put the gloves on.. happens more with an almost empty stove reaching in

With a water jacket on my boiler, I rarely get burnt but I get tagged with black carbon soot that builds on the relatively cold jacket. Its messy and rubs off on other surfaces.

I wear welding gloves, they stop about 3" from my elbow, so every once in a while I'll get corporal stove loading stripes.
