Burning Hunk

Hello, Ive been lurking the site for months, joined about a month ago, and have only posted a couple times. I figured a proper intro was in order and a Thanks for the site and great info contained within. I'm not new to pellet heat, but I AM new to burning pellets properly. I had a Whitfield insert in AZ for years, and in my small condo it ran us out on low, so I figured all was good. Turns out I had suspect venting, no OAK, and overall not easy to clean, although I was pretty consistent and thorough. It just always had a little smell and dust. I just wrote it off as part of the deal.

I moved to SW Colorado just over 7 years ago, into a brand new house, and have been paying through the nose for propane (old story I know). Finally this summer I put my research hat on and came up with a plan. When we first moved in our home had forced air, and a propane fireplace, that we never ran. It did nothing to heat, and when it was off it DUMPED cold air into the room due to the large vent hole. I eventually yanked it, covered up all the holes, and installed an electric fireplace in it's place to at least keep that corner of the living room warmish. The forced air was left at 69 during the day, with electric help downstairs during the day, and 66-67 at night, which usually cooked us out upstairs while the downstairs was freezing. For all this, we paid $500-600/month during the winter. Summer use is about a gallon of propane a month. So $2200-2500/year to heat... uncomfortably.

For the area I was working, price, and local availability, I came up with the Quad Santa Fe. My home is 1900 feet, but the master is upstairs and WAY back in the corner. I suspected the pellet wouldn't heat it, but it is actually better than I had hoped. I still use a little electric assist, a fake woodstove, which is surprisingly quiet, consistent, and has done us well for quite a few years considering the low spring price we paid at HD, thinking $49.00.

I have pics, as this seems the rule here. The before is the electric fireplace we used for years. Also some remodel pics, and some after shots. I installed an OAK on Christmas Day. I bought a kit from "Woodlands" for $35ish dollars, and fabbed my own stove flange with strain relief. I questioned how well it would work given the "openness" of the firebox, but it has raised overnight temps by 3* and the pipe is ice cold, so I know its drawing.

Ill be popping up with some questions, but thanks again for all the info. I am an equipment technician and I also am a lubricants geek, so Ill try to offer my knowledge if I see the opportunity.

Cheers!

Edit... It appears I'm struggling to post pics, so Ill get it figure out eventually and put them in the thread.

Welcome Dinger! Obviously you've been reading as evidenced by your complete profile and signature. Thanks! But, we've got to see pics...you know the deal... ;-).

Ok, I've resized them several times until they are not logical anymore... I must be doing something wrong. I read the sticky above and think I understand, but no dice. The message received is pics must be smaller than 1100kb... I'm half that and still wont take? Suggest?

Sorry, I can't help with any suggestions on posting pics, but if your avatar is any hint as to your stove set up, it looks like don222 is going to be jealous. A recessesed stove with recessed lighting... I hope you have a foot heater in there somewhere... Don has an electric heater to keep warm while cleaning the stove. Welcome to the forum.

OK I think I have it.

Electric fireplace before is obvious. Found a header and some electrical, so the project grew, but gained a light and a bigger opening than originally planned.

Outside. I had to deal with the hole left from the propane vent, so I bandaided it with an 18' tile. Also OAK hole and install.

Since I'm trying to follow rules, I'm burning Rocky Mountain Pellets (ton), which are 100% beetle kill soft wood, and I have local access to Heatr's, the Eastern AZ kind, which I burned for years, at $196/ton. I also have 10 bags of some other beetle kill that I picked up while in Denver last month, but I cant think of the name right now and the bags are blank. I have their flier somewhere, but I assume similar to the Rocky Mountains. I'm burning a bag a day on medium with the feed bar just off the minimum, maintaining 72-74 inside while the temps outside currently swing from 16-37 with LOOOWWWW humidity. Humidifier is forthcoming, as is a UPS.

Lastly, I got a HD gift card for Christmas so obviously I had to...

This might be the smartest idea I have ever seen. Plus I just like to see stuff fly to hundreds of feet at over 200 mph.

Welcome. That looks really sharp. Nice job. Maybe paint the vent black?

Must be the pics, its all flat stove black, with the exception of the tile, which looks odd in the pics but really grew on me over time.

That pic was the christening, the surge has been added, as well as a better looking cord setup. Hindsight would have hidden the cord behind the stove. Maybe this summer I'll pull a new line behind the unit. For now it's function. I plan a UPS as well, so the $10 surge will go in the computer drawer. I have a challenge outside which I will follow up with pics and a question, but for now, it on and functioning pretty much 24/7 except for daily ash dumps... or if it tops 75 on the Skytech.

I just love it. So does the Wife, which makes me love it more.

Looks very nice...inside and out. I also like the 18in tile "bandaid" on the outside as it looks like it matches your house style from what we can see. Well done!

neat, very neat! Welcome and good luck. Have you considered joining the Pellet Pig group?

Thanks for the nice responses. The light was all of $12, but I agree, I really like it. It is actually a remodel unit due to the lack of framing members there. The nook, well it was always there we just opened it up and gave it some life.

Maybe worthy of a new thread, but has anyone designed a door "lock" for the Santa Fe? I have a child with autism, and while she's only opened the door once, and seems to be respecting "NO!", I would like to engineer out the problem.

I'll post a new topic if necessary...
