cracked Fiskar x-27

Got my new x-27 in the mail on Friday and have been working with it all weekend splitting some blue spruce just off the stump, about 3 cords bucked to 18". Worked like a champ. Still had to use the 8lb mual or wedge and sledge to get through the bigger rounds, but once the round was opened the Fiskars went right through the bigger chunks as long as I was able to avoid the bigger knots. Cleaning up this afternoon I noticed this crack in handle just below the head. I guess I'll be contacting Fiskars to see what they say, I sure would like a replacement as I am nervous about using this with a cracked handle, although if the handle cracks again I'll ask for a refund, there were no overstrikes or mis-hits I'm not exactly sure when it cracked. fiskars-4.jpg fiskars-3.jpgView attachment 82584

Not arguing, just saying here........................................How many times did you miss your "target" whilst splitting with the X27?????
 
I hope Fiskars takes care of you (they should).
 
don't believe you will have a problem. supposed to be guarenteed for life.
 
I have beat the snot out of my x25 and no problems......been using two years now. I am surprised to hear it.....Why not return it to the people you bought it from? Your local wal mart should sell x27 too. I would not use that.....something bad could happen. a flying axe head could kill something. be safe. I have missed my mark probably about 5 times since using and struck top of shaft always makes me cringe and I inspect it. no probs yet

No mis-hits that I remember. I would strike in the middle of the round first...if I got no significant crack then I would wedge and sledge it open. The only thing that I can think of is...on a couple of the larger rounds when I did get a crack and followed up with a second strike on the near edge if the round still didn't open I would strike again on the far edge...a couple of times when the round still didn't open the head sunk in to the point that the handle was up against the unsplit round, I guess it could have hit hard enough to crack...maybe I should have taken the time to spin the round...seems to me that it should have been able to take it as I don't think the handle would have hit that hard after the head sunk into the round that far.

That shouldn't have hurt it at all. I think you just got one goofed up from the factory. Its a first though to hear of having anything wrong with them from the factory. I'm almost 100% sure they'll send a replacement ASAP.

I should add that when I was switching from swinging the x25 to the x27 on several occasions I cracked the handle right below the head and right against the round so freaking hard the handle vibrated painfully in my hands. I did say several occasions right? Still no signs of cracking or anything at all on the axe so again that shouldn't have hurt it at all what you were doing with sticking it in to the head. Hope that helps. Please follow up for all of us on this thread and tell us what Fiskars will do about this.
 
Scary. One of my other hobbies involves fiberglass and composite items, and my experience with them failing tells me not to even think of using the axe with a crack like that in it. But I figure you know that already. Thanks, though, I'm gonna be sure to check mine out closely before the next use.

Filled out the warranty claim on line explaining the crack and attached a photo, got a response within minutes:

Warranty ClaimsIf you have submitted a warranty claim online, unless we have a follow up question for you, consider your claim handled and you will receive a new tool and/or replacement part in 12-15 business days. Our normal business hours are 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday (CST).

Doesn't get any better than that. I just hope it was a fluke, because I really like the axe.

thats good, as i am going to get one of these.

they could do better = over night it. yeah, i know, just sayin. ....i bet you get it faster that 12 days. i bet before the end of the week.

The transition from the SS to the X27 was a bit painful.. but only a couple over strikes involved. I checked and found no damage. I will point out between a couple friends and I, and my brother, I know of 4 SS's that have a combined 40 or so cords split, not a problem with a one of them.

I am impressed with how fast Fiskar's took care of it, let us know how close to the date range they hit.. Christmas shipping is winding up now..
 
You will have it in a week or less. I had them replace a round point all metal shovel one time. New one was there in no time. I welded the old one, & now have two ;)

Id say thats a defect.

I've beaten the tar out of my X27 over the past year and a half and she is still in one peice... over strikes, under strikes, half strikes, side strikes, union strikes. If it's f-ed up, I've done it to my X27. :)

Heck I accidentally ran over mine last month with a loaded truck bed and it didn't do a thing to the ax they are tuff bugers;ex

Just to beg the question, does Pallet Pete use the X27 to split the pallets? ;lol If so is there any particular technique?

Hit the suckers and watch me fly into a million pieces all over the yard ! Actually I don't burn them in the stove anymore unless I am low on wood just to much work. If you want to take em with the fiskars hit the center of the slat between the runners in the pallet. That's how I did a few but mostly just buzzed them with the saw which is way way way faster.

Most probably already know this, but if you buy a Fiskars at Sears, you can walk in with a broken one and they will give you a new one. I did it myself once awhile ago.

I know that doesn't help in this situation, but thought it might be good info for someone.

OK I don't feel quite so bad now, as I chipped a tiny bit out of the top corner on what I'd call a dumb-ass strike.
 
Just got a call from Fiskars, they needed a physical address instead of a P.O. box so they could Fedex a new x27 on Friday. They said definitely don't use the cracked one, guess I'll be wedge and sledging this weekend unless Fedex show up early on Sat. They don't want the broken one back, told me to recycle it so no one else gets a hold of it. I think I'll just take the head off the handle, might be able to use it for something. Even with the crack the head was not moving, still seemed solidly attached. Better safe than sorry, I could just see the head flying off at the top of the swing and going through a big bay window on that side of the house, pretty sure they wouldn't cover that, you can't fix stupid.

The steel could be used to make a wedge. It is good steel that shouldn't be wasted. How are your forging skills?!

anyone have any issues with these axes cracking in the cold? i have one coming my way and my only concern is using it when its below freezing out.
 
10 cords dead mostly Red/White with a little Bur Oak & Shagbark Hickory from May 2011 to Jan 2012 with the X25.Wore that teflon coating off the first month.Between 3-4 more cords mixed green Norway/Silver Maple,Mulberry,Honey Locust,Black Walnut tops/branches from June 2011 to Aug 2012.One day last January it was around 5 degrees fahrenheit when I was splitting,no signs of any brittleness or fatigue in the head or handle.Still have part of that sticker on handle below the head,a few overstrikes but nothing severe.
 
I broke my first Pro Splitting Ax a couple years ago. I took it back to the store from whence I had purchased it and they replaced it, no questions asked.
