As you can see, there are big rocks - I saw it from a distance and walked up a path, came around a bend and there he was! I assume those are rack sprouts on his head?
I was working on my truck yesterday putting on new brake pads and went into the house for some tools. I came out and there was a full size doe in my garden, not 3 feet from my truck, munching on some grass there. Tame as can be... I shoo'd it away, as I do not like them eating my plants here. I have a deer fenced area for my berries and nursery plants that I am sizing up. All my maples, liquid ambers and fruit trees here have a deer 'hair cut,' about 4.5 feet off the ground. There are deer grazing around here all the time, especially this time of year when the rains taper off.
In WV we had deer like that - just tamed animals. But in NJ, MA and RI they tend to stay away from people. In fact, I've seen more bear and foxes than deer in New England.
Yes, and it may end up a big rack at that! You must have had the wind in your favor. I don't know if you hunt but, your a natural.
Don't hunt, but if I did I'd use a bow.....unless survival was at stake, in which case I'd use anything at my disposal.

Craig, I still hunt with both bow and rifle. Wife used to but physical problems put a stop to that. Still, most years we have several deer we can get close to. In addition, they get used to me driving the atv and when I know or think deer are close I go really slow and try to make as little noise as possible. I swear many times does will bring their fawns out for me to see. We love it. Even better, we've had 3 fawns born right in our yard. The closest one was born about 10 feet from the kitchen window! Sweet!
My wife also will never forget that magic year when a doe with her twin fawns would lay and watch her pick raspberries or weed the garden. One time they also got up, went to the back of the garden where I had planted some buckwheat (outside the fence). They ate for a short time then came and laid right where they had been.
Last night we had a doe come about 20' from the house and we know it could hear us talking because we had windows open and also the sliding glass door. So I walked in front of the door once. She looked at me then turned and took a bite out of an apple leaf.

Five or six years ago every time I would go out the basement door when I officed down there I would run into the same doe in the yard grazing. Started putting out corn for her, which is illegal in VA. That year she dropped three fawn and looked like a train had run over her.
One evening I went for the sundown walk in the woods and her and the three fawn were grazing in the woods. When I walked up she didn't move, just looked up. I just sat down and watched them eat. Maybe ten minutes later she turned and went to the trail and headed back down into the woods leaving me with the fawn. I was shocked. I sat there for twenty minutes with the little guys and eventually she came back and got them and they went back into the deep woods.
Blew my freakin mind. She stills lives down in front of the house. Big girl. One of the crop grew up to be a nice buck and left several years ago.

He is very muscular. I think he has very little competition for the female of the species - not big herds in that area! There are perhaps 1,000 acres or so of wildlife refuges and other properties that he likely keeps to.

We have a serious overpopulation here that leads to competition and weakness. No predators and little hunting is not good for the health of the herd.

Yup, though some stay mangy looking for too long and look ill. We had one last year that was just plain brain dead dumb. It's coat looked bad. The mom seemed to have abandoned it. I don't think it made it through the winter.

Here are a few of my all time favorites taken on our place.
The little buck. He put on that rack in an impossibly short amount of time. Now if he would have just taken that van that the plumber couldn't get to start and never came back for with him when he moved on...
They are pretty much ubiquitous here. This is from 5 minutes ago. I just stepped out to mow the lawn and somebody was already at work on it. Good thing, it started raining one minute afterward.

Yeah, years ago my parents came to visit and while we were at work they went for a walk in the woods. They were surprised that there wasn't any undergrowth. Told them deer pretty much take care of that.
The three or four vegetables I eat in a year are protected from them by the walls of the supermarket.

50 years ago that deer would have been sliced, diced and in that meat case in an hour.
