wood id...?

I'm normally pretty good at identifying wood but this one has me stumped. It was cut down by a creek bed. Not sure what it is. My initial thought was elm, but not sure.. Maybe walnut, maybe mulberry (not very native to MI?) maybe something else.

What is it, and how long does it take to season? I'm used to Ash, oak, maples, pines, box elders, etc. Whatever it is, it seems to be checking VERY quickly.





 
Not sure what kinds are common there but could be a Hickory...does it weigh a ton? >>
 
I guess it COULD be ash. That would explain the quick checking... Only about 15% of ash here are not effected by EAB, and most of the ash I cut is dead and down, or has clear EAB marks.

Another thing that made me think it wasn't ash is that it had a darker core. Granted, as I said, most of my ash is dead, but all of the ash I cut is almost one solid color all the way through. I understand though that there are multiple species of ash, and this may be another species than what I typically get.
 
Ash, not a doubt in the world.

I've never seen Ash with a dark core like that ever. That's what threw me off. Huh. Learn something new every day. Either way, that should be good to burn this winter. I love me some ash. :D
 
I guess we have to remember there's different types. That tree looks more like the Ashes we have here in NY. They seem to get much bigger as you head toward Ohio.
Black Ash has a darker heartwood than even that. It is the preferred Ash for basket making(very ring porous). Those split Ash baskets I love.
I counted the growth rings, the easy to spot characteristic of all the Ashes.
Approximately 60 give or take. Not really a young tree. And I would say Green Ash on this one. I separate them by the shape of their seeds. It could be White too.

Split, stacked, and put into this year's wood for winter. MC was only 22%. By winter, it'll be golden. Got about a half of a face in total. I love me some ash. :)
