Well, I managed to get the ram out after removing the retaining ring. I had to wiggle and pull it a lot. Alas, I did not think about all the fluid in that 5" cylinder, and it spilled out all over the place. After 2 rolls of paper towels picking it up, it has a layer of kitty litter on it now.

Oh yeah, the retaining nut came loose again! It'll be loktite at a minimum this time around. I have to read more of that other thread now re: o-rings.
 
I once had that happen to the steering cylinder on a JD 425 Garden Tractor. I had access to a metal lathe and part the welded cylinder apart at the weld and sure enough the the piston retaining nut had come off. Loctited it back in place and had a certified welder weld the cylinder back up. Saved about $300. I used the high strength stuff that has to be heated better the Loctite will turn loose.
