Can someone tell me what happened to the glass on my insert?

All was fine, few hours later I walk by and see this.

What wouldve caused it and is it covered under a warranty?

Just curious, is that a PE stove?
Hard to tell from the photo but it looks like maybe the split was up against the glass...door closed against it perhaps?

It is a PE summit. No wood up against it, but I have had that happen before. Two days ago that area was black, which does happen from time to time. usually it self-cleans...but this morning I noticed that.

FYI - the pic makes it look like a hole...but its not. its just some sort of film that peeling. Not sure if its creosote and self-cleaning now and it just looks like a film is peeling.

Im coming up empty on google for anyone having similar issues.

I agree it looks like there was a split to close that interfered with the air flow over the glass causing heavy buildup on the glass there. Also there should never be black if it is you are burning incorrectly and or have wet wood. And no dirty glass is not covered by warantee

It's not broken or defective. It's dirty. Use it as is or clean it if you want.

You may want to check the gasket between the glass and door. I'm wondering if an air leak is helping to promote that buildup.

What kind of wood are you burning? I'm guessing a particularly 'wet' or resin filled piece. You can see how the liquids sprayed, then flowed down the glass.

Is that peeling in the inside or the outside? That photo looks like it's peeling on the outside, and that is NOT normal, no matter what kind of wood you're burning, and you should consider it a warranty issue. If it's on the inside, that's a perfectly normal effect of burning terribly wet wood.

My bet is if you get up to 650-700 stovetop that will .....'poof'........disappear. There was no coating on my summit and sometimes I'll get some pitch spit marks, but they always go away if I get up to temp. I've never had thick flaking like that though and I load long splits. Close to the glass.

So it's a lot of creosote build up on the glass. Real wet wood and a cool fire box and wood too close to the glass. Get that stove ripping at 500 degrees for a few hours and it will all go away. When my stove was new and my oak was a year old I had black glass every day.
