Like mentioned by a few folks previously, a healthy dose of concern is good thing and will lead you to burning using proper techniques. I too may have had a chimney fire during my first week of burning. We actually were using the stove during my house build burning up framing scraps. Being a novice, I would close the air off when we went home for the night - glazing my pipes each time with a fine coating of sote. This went on for a couple months at least The first week moved in, I built a big kindling pile and fired it up using some cardboard - within minutes the interior single wall was glowing bright red, was smoking at the roof kit connection, and kicked off the smoke alarms! I honestly dd not know to be scared - I just backed down the air until the pipe cooled then set it on cruise mode for the night. If that happened today - I would probably shot my pants and rightfully so. Having knowledge and healthy concern would have prevented this in my case and it sounds like you are on the right path. Now I am an every other month pipe cleaner - not much is in there, but I can tell when I am burning at optimal heat and when I try to run too low, plus it gives my peace of mind
Good luck.
