Burning Hunk

It's been almost like Spring time here, temps have been in the 60's to low 70's with almost no wind. I'm liking it for several reasons, not using much wood and crappie fishing has been good to us this last five weeks in a row. The weekends are warm and then it cools down during the week and has repeated this for weeks. This weekend it's supposed to be around 70 again. Just crazy weather!

Not here! It's 22 and falling 30 mph winds. Got a full load of ash and cherry warming the house now!

Another cold weekend coming for Long Island. 50 today with wind advisories, so its on the way.

local area 1-6" of white stuff south to north yesterday southeastern WI, 17 deg F for evening low tonight - maybe mid 30's for todays high- Old Man winter still here. Old saying still applies March in like a Lion out like lamb- but we have had 14-20" snowstorms as late as end of April - and storms of lesser magnitude in early May. So It ain't over yet. Fat lady not withstanding.

Central Connecticut... It was 70 yesterday and going to be a high of 20 on Saturday. And my wife is out of town so there's nobody to tend the stove while I'm at work. I know what I'll be doing Friday night.

50F yesterday, 17F right now, looking at -5F tonight, winter hasn't left yet...

Interesting weather for you folks up Northeast. I think we've had less than 5" the hole winter. We've had no rain or snow for around a month now.

Not here in the NW corner of the US. We get a lot of our winter weather from Alaska and this winter it just keeps pumping it our way. Shoveled snow the last four weeks and it keeps building up. More on the way. My woodpile is decimated (at least the well-seasoned stuff). Been trying to buy a cord of dry wood to get me through until June so I don't have to burn the 22% moisture content stuff from 2 years ago but, the fact of the matter is, it's a major stroke of luck to find wood that is actually dry around here. "Bone dry" in the ad means anything from cut two years ago, left in the rain and split last month to "it was cut last fall and it's been under cover". Most of it will burn but not very well. Have a guy coming this afternoon to bid a mini-split heat pump but, even if I pull the trigger, I don't imagine they'll be able to install it much before the end of April.

Off to ski 4" of fresh powder on top of 12" fresh yesterday! Wooooot! I love winter!

Still burning 24/7 but now in 12-14 hr. cycles instead of 8-10hr..

We are in a run of 50-60ish degree sunny days and 20's and 30's at night. Only burning at night right now.

We haven't had the best winter for snow but did get over 2 feet in a 3 day span with high winds. Cold this weekend with lows in single digits.

I thought it was over, when we had nearly two weeks of temps above 60F, so I ordered my first 15 yards of mulch for delivery this week. Now I see it will be 16F with snow tomorrow! March is just beginning, folks... there is more to come!

This is nothing. Snow after mothers day happens all the time around here.

Moving is on the radar in the next 4-5 yrs.

This is our best winter in decades for around here. Cold and lots of snow. Winter has been relentless this year. My woodpile is getting juiced too. I was just commenting to my wife and daughter last night(even though they don't seem to care as long as it stays warm inside the house) how much difference the fuel makes for heat and burn times.

I normally only burn fir all winter. I'll burn a bit of spruce or pine in the shoulder seasons. Well this year I got caught short and I knew I was going to be. I bought a 'dry' cord of birch out of the paper. Knew it was soaked as it was unloaded, promptly stacked that aside for future use. And then I bought a dry load of 'mixed' wood '80% fir mixed load'. Well I will give him that it was actually cured. Split/Stacked in a hayshed which dries fast in these parts. But it was more like 80%pine and spruce. What a difference now from burning three cords of that and now back into my prime tight grain fir. I know btus are weight and I can sure pack a lot more weight in with primo fir than a mixed wood softwood cord.

Told my wife, lesson learned. I've got to spend a little more effort getting into the woods this year and get some good fir.

Last fire was. . .4 nights ago. Probably will light up again tonight and continue for the chilly weekend. It was 82°F here yesterday. Set a record, which also happened when we hit 0°F a few weeks ago. I'm not a fan of this volatility.

Despite a very mild February, March managed too come in like a lion here. Still, it feels like winter has missed us this year!

Glad to see atleast one Vernon got a good winter, my Vernon winter has stunk this year.

Weather report says winter is back tomorrow. They are planning on blowing snow on my ski mountain this weekend. Can't wait, skiing, sipping hot toddy around the wood stove.

Forecast for the next four nights is 26F, 17F, 12F, and 25F. So, we're back to two stoves burning, as of tonight!

Actually had the stove go cold for about a week in late February. Not going to waste wood when it's 60 degrees outside. It's back up to full heat now.

Winter is not over until the fat lady sings...and she is sitting in front of her wood stove keeping warm and wondering why everyone is pushing for her to get on stage.... :p
