I have a chance to purchase from Tractor Supply their brand of log splitter. It is a 25 ton force, vertical placement for the wood splitter and uses a gasoline engine to power the unit. The price is $999 before taxes. Should I run from this, purchase or is there a better brand of log splitter?

They used to be made by Speeco, so great splitters for the money. Not sure if they all still are, I'd ask and find out. If it is, you can't go wrong imo.

They're still SpeeCo. As far as entry level splitters are concerned, I'd look at than one and the 22-ton DHT model that has a little faster cycle time.

I have heard good things about the speecos, have never seen one.

I have a DHT-22 which has been excellent so far.

If I had the chance to trade more power for a higher cycle time, I would not do it... the 22 can crunch right through a big oak crotch crossgrain if you so desire.

My advice is to shop for something 20 tons-ish, look for the lowest cycle time, require vertical/horizontal operation, and look for one that its users really like. (This is the formula that led me to the dht-22.)

If I wanted to go go up a level from the the 22-ton model in the DHT product line, I'd skip the 27-ton unit and select the 28-ton model with its faster cycle time. Home Depot currently offers the 28-ton model.

The 28 has a bigger engine and pump than the 22 and 27 do. It's not a big speed upgrade over the 22 (10.4 sec vs. 10.8 sec), but it is a little faster with 6 extra tons of oomph. I've never used one but I suspect I'd like it!

Correct; however, I was comparing the speeds of the 27-ton and 28-ton models. If I want to go up in splitting force from the 22-ton model, I'd select the 28-ton unit over the 27-ton unit. You get roughly the same upgrade in force yet keep the faster speed when opting for the 28-ton model. The 27-ton model is factory rated at 14s, but some units have clocked around 15s.

Of course, all of this is governed by the wallet.

The log cradle on my DHT 22 ton makes life so much easier, I hate bending over to pick up wood off the ground. I split it and toss it right in the wheel barrow and then stack it. One of these years i'll get a tractor...

I got it shipped off amazon for just under 1k. I did have to put it together and fill with hydraulic fluid but am very pleased with it.
