No, it should exceed the stove width. You can make it the width of the fireplace opening. Maybe attach it to the lintel?
I like the idea Bg, but I'm not sure how it would look? I was thinking a 4" wide shield mounted to the mantle, with a space between it and the mantle?
That would work fine too.
Make it 8" wider than the stove on each side. There should be a 1" gap from the mantle and it should stick out past the mantel by an inch.
