With the thermostat installed I reinstalled the stove to flue. Purchased 50 lbs of sand at Lowes since my outside pile is wet and covered with snow. It did not take all 50 lbs to cover the bottom of the stove with 2 inches of sand. The local Jotul dealer had a reasonably priced thermostat ~$24. The Rutland version ~ $14 is available at local hardware stores, but reviews are not good.

Built a small fire. Nice. Pleased with draft of my new flue installation.

I plan to go slow with fire size and temp, but am not sure it is necessary. I did not replace any cast iron parts and the stove has been up to full temperature albeit 23 years-ago.

Thanks for the help many of you have offered. Going to post another thread with wall heat shield pics.

Cheers,

STJP

once you get a fire going bring it up slow to 750 and then back down. might as well get it over with incase it feels like it wanted to let out the stink

500 is in the medium range i burn mine in the 600 range give or take 25. that's high says the manual but it runs cleaner that way. when starting the temp runs up over 700 i've seen it at 800 but for a short amount of time then the thermostat takes it down to it's cruising range
