The question as posed is whether it's safe to run the stove with a large unregulated hole open to outside air in the back of the firebox. That is what would happen without the baffle in place.

A giant crack in the baffle is how it's been reported. I have seen this happen from long term overfiring several times. It is ugly and most often irreparable. It's very possible that the deflector damage was caused by this large crack if it shot superheated flames at this area.
That said, we still haven't seen pictures of the firebox and baffle. Everything is speculation at this point regarding the extents of damage and feasibility of repair. And as Ashful points out, we don't know anything about the hearth, flue condition or wood supply.

With all due respect, that's an awful big if, and any other potential damages are still unknown. I stand by my earlier recommendation to find a quality replacement stove. It's just too damned important to play if's on this situation. I also stand by my earlier recommendation to call The Chimney Sweep and talk to Tom personally. He truly will help the best he can, and he's been in the biz for decades and is intimately familiar with this stove and others. I also still recommend looking at the Drolet, Englander, or other quality, but inexpensive replacement.
I'm also familiar with this style stove, and would in no way recommend trying to burn without the baffle/secondary, or even with a repair of unknown quality. These stoves are designed very carefully and should in no way be compromised by sloppy repairs.
LouCammie, Please heed the advice of the experienced members here. It's just too important.
I've stayed out of this thread for a while, but frankly, some of the advice I've seen for this lady and her daughter is downright frightening and borders on irresponsible. Just my opinion of course
I showed this thread to my wife and she was appalled. Mostly concerned for the safety of Lou and her family. And she's no stranger to stove issues either. I really think that if this family were closer, she would want to take them in until the situation is settled. That's how important it is.

well I'm back here after a lengthy illness and a month later and still no luck finding a chimney installer-8 no shows last week. I don't know what ever happened to a healthy work ethic. I just do not know what to do anymore. The pneumonia was a direct result of living here.
Geez.....maybe they all got sick too? Seems unlikely but you never know. You'd think they'd call though. If they're your only option out there I'd call them back and find out what the issue is and get somebody out there. Have you tried any HVAC people??

I have been reading along with many others I'm sure about this woman's situation. I don't have any advice about repairs and live too far away to go over and help her. By now she and her child are probably half frozen what with no heat and sounds like no monies. May I suggest a Go Fund Me page ? By now she could have more than paid for a new stove with installation and probably 2 cords of split and stacked seasoned wood. Maybe. It seems as nothing here has gotten her any heat and that is what she needs most. I can't imagine, almost can't believe she can be surviving where she is at with no heat. Can't wait to hear how this ends. Hopefully all will turn out wonderful.

Yeah I figured that was more of a "for the time being" type of deal, not a 120 year old uninsulated house's sole heat source.
At this point I can certainly believe her story. I've been trying to contact one of the local churches there that just happens to be affiliated to the same organization our church is, ZERO FREAKIN' RESPONSE for 30 days now! And Facebook notes that they have indeed seen the messages I've sent to them. Not even a follow up "don't bother us". Seems these people in Newfoundland Canada don't have much time for anything but themselves.

If anyone has any strings they can pull, in terms of getting the chimney situation evaluated and resolved, it would be much-appreciated. We already have a solution for the stove, but if you’d like to help out with that, please PM me or begreen. The primary obstacle for now is providing a safe installation.

It's a tall 3 story liner in a fireplace, complicated by the fact that the chimney was cut off below the roof, so it will need a class A extension attached to the liner and chimney stub.
Where did you come across this info? I thought she had resolved her issues since we hadn't had any follow-up posts. Can one assume you have contact information for her should I actually get through to someone??

It’s important to note, due to the liability of having an appliance that is not safely installed, we’re looking to have this handled professionally. You may know what you’re doing, but if you’re not certified or insured to do it, it creates some issues on my end.
