The damper handle and the primary air control handle on my Defiant Encore 2140 both make a screaking sound when I move them, which doesnt surprise me much. Inside it must all be metal on metal, and it's now 25 years old, so ... no surprise to me.

She says it bothers her and even can wake her up in the middle of the night when I get up to go to the bathroom (I'm an old man and I drink LOTS of coffee) and load it up.

I told her I know of no way to do anything about it short of opening up the insides of the stove which I do NOT want to do. But she says can't I at least squirt something into the holes where the handles come out of?

I'm not making this up.

My response to that suggestion is that any kind of lubricant I put into or onto a stove that reaches 500 - 700 degrees would be vaporized, and possibly leave a residue that I wouldnt want in there. I cant imagine it would present a fire hazard but still I dont think it's a reasonable thing to try to do. And I did look in the Service Manual and the words oil, lubricate, lubricant are not in there.

Anybody want to give me a supportive statement here?

NAPA's "Mac's #1413 Dry Graphite Film Lubricant"
MAKE SURE STOVE IS COLD -- DO NOT APPLY ON HOT SURFACE!!!! Flammable until dry.

an aerosol can -- I've use it on my door hinges & the swing out tops on the T5, really get to squalling/squeaking. Have used it on the damper control to get it to stop squeaking. Part of my yearly cleaning now is to hit the hinge points of the top & door with a squirt of this lube. I find no temp rating on the can, but it keeps my hinges lubed all year -- particularly the very annoying sounding swing out top hinge.

Think CRC & others have equivalent products.

Neverseeze if pretty amazing stuff, the grease carrier smokes away but the residue usually works well.

As a locksmith I use graphite on lots of things other than locks. After you lubricate it ask her if she is happy now...then ask her if she can fix her snoring as it keeps you awake...lol

You can sure try it. What squeaks is the steel cable that connects the handle to the trap door at the back of the stove. Is the stove in your bedroom?

Well thanks all, those are things I hadnt thought of!

So she might be right even though she has no idea of what she's talking about ... :)

And the stove is not in the bedroom. But she is a light sleeper and does not snore either, so I have no leverage in this one other than common sense. And now my failure to think of graphite calls that into question.

Mine makes a little noise when I open the bypass but if I do it quick, it is less..

I have honed my technique but still it is not a sweet sound. Not fingernails on a blackboard, but not nothing. Not a screech but a screak.

OK folks, graphite it is.

But still, I have to get to the source, which will mean disassembly, yes? I have the exploded diagram in the manual but verbally, what would I have to open up to do it?

Exactly how I would describe the noise mine makes..
