Here is one of my recent projects from cedar logs to almost finished deck. Cedar was milled a full 2" thick and ripped with a skilsaw. Cedar trees came from my back yard and my sons property. Most were cut by our local electric company (PG&E) which were endangering power lines.

I made it all out of full 2" thick so I can drive my Ranger on it for firewood delivery close to my front door. Next is a roof over part of it to keep my firewood dry.

I had a deck that was basically like yours, with the stringers butted up to and supported by nails from the rim. I put a large hot tub on it, and the weight bent down the nails that were the only thing supporting the weight. I had to insert a beam under the stringers so there was a solid support.

It is hard to tell from your picture, but metal hangers could help with the weight if you do not have them in.

A hot tub needs its own independent support regardless of using hangars or not. A full hot tub with a few people in it is extremely heavy. Thats way way to much weight for any normal kind of deck. My deck will only have to support people and my Ranger. The Ranger will not be putting weight at the perimeter only in the center where I did some additional support.

Not mandatory but it leaves a smother finish. I cut with a standard chain mostly.
