pacific energy summit in need of repair-is it worth my money-have I been scammed

  • Active since 1995, Hearth.com is THE place on the internet for free information and advice about wood stoves, pellet stoves and other energy saving equipment.

We strive to provide opinions, articles, discussions and history related to Hearth Products and in a more general sense, energy issues.

We promote the EFFICIENT, RESPONSIBLE, CLEAN and SAFE use of all fuels, whether renewable or fossil.
If one of the stove and liner manufacturers would donate a new stove and liner or pellet stove that would be some awesome public relations for that company in this situation.;)

Nice thought, and you're right. But as I think begreen might have already mentioned, her old chimney has no roof penetration. It was knocked off down below roof level, probably when installing new roofing many years back. This is fairly common, the chimney that's 8 feet from where I'm sitting now is currently in the same condition, or I'd have another woodstove installed on it.

One has to either penetrate the roof with a stub atop the existing masonry stack, or start fresh with external class-A. The house is a row home end unit, and the current masonry chimney is on the shared wall.

We really need to get a good chimney guy there to evaluate the situation, and lay out the options.

I don't know all the particulars like you guys do, but if this is a lady would a pellet stove be a better choice, could you just pipe it out the side of the house and forget the existing chimney, and pellets would be easier on her then dealing with wood.

Good question. She’s watching this thread, so you should hear from her at some point, here.

Excellent idea, although it would be beneficial if there was a little more back and forth, to see if that is even an option. There are a lot of good questions that have gone unanswered.

It appears OP has left the forum. Hopefully she found someone to fix her problem, or at least is someplace warm.

She was here this past Thursday..

You are right, that we need a little more back and forth to find a good solution. However, she recently told begreen and I that came down with pneumonia, so she’s dealing with that.. Understandable, with this flu season. I caught it too, and I live in a heated house.

well I'm back and it has been a difficult year-still trying to get anyone to nstall a flex down my chimney but no one will go up on the roof as it is like a steeple. Still have the pe summit and can't sell it to get anpther--even offered it in trade but no one is interested and no one wants to consider installing a double lined up the side of the house because of having to go on the roof as well. So now its Sept and already freezing here-In the same spot I was in last feb. Any new information out there I can avail of would be appreciated.

At this point, I'd suggest a pellet stove that you can vent right through the wall, either that or have a furnace installed. 3 stories of class A is going to be $$$.

Neither of those are options at this point in my life. I could never afford those things-I mean I am currently taping up broken windows for the winter which is why I came to the forum for advice on how to utilize what I already have. To be fair I have accepted the fact that we will likely never have heat but hopefully a few 10$ space heaters in day and warm blankets at night will get us to spring in May :) I just popped back in to let ya'll know I didnt die or anything and that I was without the means to post during this time. Thanks for listening.

LouCammie, what's holding you in Newfoundland? Seems like an expensive place to live on a limited budget. If you are bound and determined to install that PE Summit, I think you are throwing good money after bad.

I am here in NL because my kids are here and because I cannot afford to go elsewhere-I am on disability and it is a small island in the middle of the atlantic-i do not drive-I am visually impaired with a degenerative eye condition. i owe more than my house is worth and frankly I am trapped. my doctors are here ad medicare is free here. what are my options to leave if I cannot afford to get heat for goodness sake. I have no money to throw away after a winter of repairs to plumbing and mishaps and medications. I also have a child who has 'issues' to care for. Right now we are bracing ourselves for another winter and battening down the hatches as we say here in Newfoundland Canada. I suppose we will see how it goes. I have some feelers out for repairing the chimney and still looking for a stove that is in good spec-if I can determine what a good choice could be for my situation perhaps I can start putting money towards it-saving wher I can. Despite my visual impairment I have still maintained a small home based business Owl & Butterfly Clothiers (we are on FB) I design and make reversible clothing from vintage, upcycled and newer materials. I hope to start selling a bit more to go towards a stove for next winter-as always the stove is less the issue than finally getting someone up on that steeple-like roof :)

LouCammie, it certainly sounds like you're in a rough patch in your life, I'm sorry for that. Here's your information as I understand it so far:

1. You have a PE Summit that you got for $100, but it needs some welding work to make it usable, and that welding work might be tricky.
2. Moving is not an option
3. You've had numerous contractors cancel on you, so no chimney installed.
4. Cash is very tight.

Questions for you:
1. Have you purchased or priced out the cost of 3 stories of Class A Chimney? Very $$$
2. Have you priced out a pellet stove vs the cost of Class A chimney installed, plus the repairs to your stove, and do you have a wood supply?
3. Have you considered calling a roofing contractor? I've seen those guys on roofs a spider couldn't walk on.

Their are plenty of people here willing to help, but the more information we have the better.

I already have 2/4 of a double insulated chimney to go outside the house but cannot find an installer...I have priced out all options..I am ONLY looking for a 2nd hand stove as it is all I can afford-there is a fp insert for $400 century cw2500 that I am hoping I can gather the money for-I am selling everything if its a good deal...yes I have called roofers as well-no one wants to go up there and its a good solid roof just steep and theres lots of work here in town for roofers so they dont need my job apparently...I stopped taking 2 of my medications that cost me a couple hundred a month hoping to save money for paying someone and the stve but so far I have had zero luck. I am not a mazy person and I would go up there myself if I could but I am visually impaired and have other health issues-not taking those medications have left their mark-but I am now this week focusing on winterizing the house as best I can with the tools I have because I have made the calls and put the information out there on various job sites looking for people and leaving messages at chimney swweps/masons and roofers with no call backs ever.

Sounds very frustrating, I'm sorry to hear that no one will come out. I've experienced that myself when times are good, and contractors are turning away work, or not even answering their phone. Hopefully someone will take the time to help you out. Take care!

well a miracle has happened-i finally found a west certified guy to come install a chimney for me-he can't start for another week or 2 but better late than never. i don't know if this fall is colder than most or if i am just getting old and over not having a heat source but it sure feels cold this week.its 6 degrees saying the forecast so it's really not even cold here-i am sure soon enough it will be minus 25 or minus 40 so i am praying that wishing a few months i can afford a stove too..for now just having the chimney is enough and something to truly look forward too..am praying it won't be more than my $2000 budget but if it is i will just sell more things off as i can and the stove will have to wait another year
