So what temp does the stove have to be to boil water? We lost power today and I tried to boil water today for an hour with the gold medallion reading about 400.

I've used a stove with the removable circular lids to cook on before and it makes a big deference when you remove the lid. Without the holes for the pan I would say the stove would have to be 600 deg F or more to boil effectively.

I steamed up the lid on the pot, but that was about it. Had a pot of water with a candy thermometer in it and only ever saw 160.

Also if the pot is not nice and flat on the bottom it won't absorb heat from stove top as well. You would probably have to run the stove almost wide open. My power was out today too. I keep a Coleman stove around and a gallon or 2 of fuel around for cooking during outages.

I have a full kettle of water boiling for coffee in about 10 minutes on a stove top @500º and about 5 minutes if it is at 650º.

Next time it gets closer of enough to run it that high I’ll try again just to see if I can do it.

My new Lopi might suck at heating my cabin, but it heats water great. 600+ on thermometer gets a 2 gallon cheap wal mart stock pot of water boiling in 45 minutes. Shower water. Mine has a real hot spot right dead center about 10” back from the front. Cooks vegetables wrapped in foil real well. Cooking inside the stove is also quick. Baked potatoes are a staple.
