Good morning!

When our Englander 25 PDVC is on heat setting 1 it tends to rather quickly develop a blanket of soft black soot on the inside of the firebox and the glass. If the setting is raised this will burn away pretty quickly too.

Is this a sign that the low burn air setting should be raised?

Right now the stove is set to 4-6-1

Thanks!

Mine does the same thing on 1. You could try turning up the air .

Soot is a sign that the flame needs more air. At least, that's what they told me when I asked the same question last month! On my Hudson River stove, I have found it helpful to make a small change to the damper and wait a while to see the results before deciding whether it helped or not. Getting more air into the stove helped a lot with the soot. I still get ash buildup, but now it's over several days and it's grey or white, not black.

i have the same stove and was having the exact problem while burning on the lower settings. So after reading many post on the burn box mod. I did a few things . 1- Blocked the two holes under the burn plate. 2- sealed the outer holes in the burn plate and 3- enlarged the rest of the ho;es just slightly bigger. This made a huge difference in the way my stove burned, much cleaner

Hi Rascal08... I've tried a number of differently-worded searches, and I can't find the burn-box mod postings. Any chance you could shoot me a link?

There are many try “25 pdv burn pot”, couple days of reading there pdv and pdvc are basically the same

Good morning!

Just an interesting side note... I had raised the low burn air setting to 7 which didn’t change the soot production much. However, we decided to try out some of the “Greene Gold” pellets on a whim to see if they burn hotter as advertised, and wouldn’t you know there’s not a speck of soot in there after burning on 1 overnight!

If that’s not a confirmation of the hotter burn I don’t know what is, lol. I guess the other question is whether the economics of the premium pellets works out but that’s for another thread I suppose!
