We have a truss factory not too far from where we live. They have a big dumpster outside which they put all their kiln dried dimensional scraps into and is free for the taking. Also makes for great fire starting material.
 
Good find, did you follow the aroma to find the red cedar? I have lots of cedar kindling also from when I worked at a outdoor cedar furniture and bird feeder wood shop. I couldn’t pass it up if the scrap was offered to me. I still have a few years worth I’m sure.
 
My sons karate class has board breaking seminars. Huge piles of short pine 1x boards broke in half. Free for the taking. I also snagged a couple of barrels of white oak hardwood flooring cut-offs from a local flooring manufacturer. Great stuff
