This morning when I got up for work.

Believe it or not, that is about as cold as it gets on long island!

I feel for you folks. The coldest I have experienced was around -16ºF and that was plenty cold enough. Chicago is heating the tracks and switches with fire. And then this was seen.

Don't panic, citizen. Our forces have the situation under surveillance.

I just hope this photo reassures people instead of creating a cat vs. noncat debate!

Well it didn’t get as cold as they thought. Only got down to -49.9f. Lol. Going to be nice this weekend and I’m ready for that.

Yes I heard by Tuesday some parts of the northern U.S. can be almost 100 degrees warmer than earlier this week. Crazy.

That was actual temp. We had colder windchills although I don’t think we had much wind that night. Usually we don’t have much wind when it’s real cold although this last cold spell we sure did some nights. The stove is an ashford 30.
Wow is that straight -51 or with wind chill. Also what stove do you have.

Most record cold temps are recorded without wind, you get radiational cooling. Some snow on the ground and no wind in the right spot and the temp drops quickly. We've had some 10-20 below the last couple nights in some of the radiational cooling spots in my area. Love to see minus 50 just once.

That is insane. Are you maintaining 71 with just the stove? Do run it on high, med or low? How many hours before you refill the stove? Sorry for all the questions but I live in Long Island and will most likely never see those temps coldest we got was 3.7 during this cold spell.

Most of the time it is warmer than 71 but I’m ok with 71 at those temps! I was running a little over 3:00 (medium) on dial maybe 3:30. However I think when it’s that cold with more draft it keeps stove hotter. I was loading full once morning once before bed and a small load of light wood to burn some coals somewhere in between. If I had all hardwood I’m sure twice a day would of worked but maybe not at those temps. Maybe all hardwood would have been worse for coaling.

Yes that was just the stove. I did turn boiler on for few minutes morning and night just to circulate the water but not long enough to get heat really. I don’t think my boiler pipes could freeze but didn’t want to chance at that temp.
