After 34 years of whacking trees on the place and 100% wood heating, I had to hang up harvesting two years ago due to age and health. Saving enough in the shed for power outages. The three years ahead rule is fact folks. Do it!

Then today I was walking down through the woods to get the mail. Right by my old harvesting trail are a 130 foot and a 100 foot white oak with trunks as straight as arrows that have fallen over due to a year of pouring rains wetting the soil and high winds a week ago. Five years ago they would have been on the stacks within days.

Good thing I don't cry easily. :confused:

Me thinks you need some family nearby. A son or son-in-law or nephew or grandkids. Gotta be somebody.
Why do you think I still live 10 minutes from my folks.
 
Tough getting old BB, I'm starting to feel the effects too, have bought my wood the last two years, cant beat father time.

Five years? You're fading fast. Just kidding. I'm right behind you. Doesn't take much to knock one out of the game: shoulder, knee, blah blah blah. Time to move to Florida an d complete the cycle of life. Again, just kidding, although sitting in the bleachers of a spring training game has its appeal. Maybe lounging by the pool later with a cool drink on the table. Hmmmm.

No one in the area willing to haul out some firewood for a share ?

I'm letting a son of a friend hunt here and don't even want a % of the haul. Just fewer deer destroying the place.
 
Nokesville. Just part of the transition I have known was coming someday. Haven't paid much attention to ones until I came upon those big straight grained beauties and it was kinda sad. ;lol

Small world, we're practically neighbors! I'm over here in Manassas. I'd sure hate to think those beauties are destined to rot away

It ain't what it used to be. Been doing the firewood thing for quite a few years myself. I am not nearly as enthusiastic as I used to be.;lol

I've been coasting the last few years on a big stash I had built, but it's getting kinda low now. And my in-laws who I've been helping, are out of dry wood. I've been trying to ease back into working on it, but the battle-worn bod is more susceptible these days if I make one wrong move. <> I've been mainly scrounging smaller dead stuff, standing or down...Red Elm with no bark, White Oak branches on the ground with all the sapwood rotted away, etc. My days of rasslin' big rounds are winding down.

I hate to say it but what used to be fun is becoming work, just visited a former wood burner friend who hung it up and moved to Florida, have to say spending the week down there didn't suck.

I am at the stage where I do not mind getting wood, it is finding the time to do so as I have been working pretty much 6 days a week since last summer. I fortunately have a 14 yr old that wants to learn, so he is getting lessons. My plan is to get them to take over when I can't any more... ;););)

My wife and I have been looking at used motorhomes. Thinking of selling the house and getting a nice one to ride off into the sunset.

You should resolve to just "supervise" the scroungers for a mere 20% of the splits. I hear ya'; I'm getting close, too.
