Comments: We picked up and installed this stove ourselves into an existing fireplace. We installed an insulated chimney liner, rear heat shield on the stove, and heat shield on the pipe out the back (to protect the face of the mantle). And we LOVE it - for the even heat, the mesmerizing view of the flames with the catalytic combuster is on, and the cozy feel it gives. We are now on our 3rd cord of wood. Like all soapstone, it takes about 45 minutes to warm up. But once it is on, it gives steady heat and takes a long time too cool down. When it was 30 degrees out, we'd load it up, put it on a slow burn, and come back 15 hours later to clear out the ashes. There would still be coals in the ashes. So definitely get a lidded ash can since you'll almost always have embers mixed in! We were concerned that the catalytic (looks like a honeycomb) would have to be cleaned a lot - just once we needed to lightly brush it - after 2 cord of wood. And you can see the difference in the smoke coming out of the chimney - you can see white smoke when the catalytic is off, but when you engage the catalytic, you can not see any smoke. We love that reduction in particulate emissions! In terms of log length, I prefer 14-16" so I can fit it better, while my husband likes the 18" (they fit, but you have to fiddle a bit more if you want to get a lot in). we can not say enough about the performance of this stove & how much our kids and friends like it too. We got the blue stone with the grey trim. And the service at Woodstock was fabulous - the kind of service that is so hard to find these days. You can tell they take pride in their work and stand by what is a very reliable stove.
