The rating of 5 is WITH my modifications to the stove (increasing plenum from 8"- to 12"-diam. and re-sizing and re-locating the fresh-air intake and re-locating the thermostat).
It gets a 3 as delivered.
Works fine, and easy to understand.
TAKES 24-INCH LOGS!
No help, whatsoever, from manufacturer about modifications, even after waiving warranty rights. Couldn't even get an opinion, just repeated parroting of "blahblah warranty blahblahblah."
No provision for connecting this "furnace" to HVAC's cold-air return. Instead, the manuf. expects you to suck air off the basement floor. what's that about?

It needs a shaker to speed ash removal between fires, as well as a way to close the damper plate without having to open the fire door.
Packed with wood, I get a 3-5 hour burn. BTW, at our house, what we heat is what we get: our thermostat is the combination of lower and upper draft settings.
You know what? I'd buy another one. But in the same way that I buy other raw material and improve it. :^)
