Likes: Good heat output. I sit in my underwear in the middle of an upstate winter. Easy loading with the top loader.

Dislikes: Glass is often sooted up. Needs frequent vacuuming of catalic converter. Will never buy a cat stove or insert. Too much work and no benefits.

Comments: This 1987 catalic converter stove was in the sunroom at the back of my house when I bought it. It took some getting used to (how to start a fire, when to use (or not use) the catalytic converter). After half a year, I was pretty good at it. I got it to heat to 450 within 15 minutes and then turned the catalytic converter on. This slows the airflow down considerable (unless I just vacuumed the CC) but the temp goes up a lot (max 900). The CC is still the original, because I do not know how to check whether it still functions or not. Seems to work well, because there is little or no smoke if the CC is on.
It needs refueling often (every hour) because it is a small stove. Heat production is very good. Problem is distributing it through the house. I use Vornado fans to blow from the sunroom to the diningroom. It is a cicular setup house, so the air circulates automatically with that one fan blowing. Another fan blows warm air into the hallway to the bedrooms. Works well too. It saves lots of oil and gas in the winter.

I am looking to upgrade to a fireplace insert. The masonry fireplace is centrally located in the house in a much larger room and the heat should distribute nicely without a fan. No decision yet on the model. Looking at quadrafire and FPX 33 insert.
