Puts out alot of good, steady heat
Absolutely love the viewing area (very large glass doors)
Burns wood completely
Can be tricky to re-load wood without smoke entering the room
Would like longer burn times (I see about 4-5 hours)
Loses heat quickly as the fire goes down (see below)
Overall I like this unit very much. I still use our Vigilant in the basement, but until the season gets pretty cold we use this insert. Self-installed, it is easy to start, and once a good fire heats the insert (about 30-45 minutes)it puts out a decent amount of heat, even without a blower. I\'m amazed at how it can create a fire with virtually no kindling, but it does! Like any stove, good wood is the key.
Pretty much my only complaint with the unit is that because it is made of relatively light steel (especially compared to a woodstove), as soon as the fire gets low or goes out you have no heat whatsoever, as the insert cools right down. If you could get this unit made from 3/8\" or 1/2\" plate steel (good luck!)it would retain heat much longer and not quit heating so abrubtly. I\'ve even considered adding more thermal mass to it for that reason - I\'ll post back if I ever do.
We have oil-fired hot air, and keep the house at 55 when we\'re at work. Once home we take the chill off with the furnace to 63, then use the insert for the rest of the evening, which brings our small house up to 69-71 or so (using a muffin fan or two to circulate the warm air).
