I bought the stove used about 3 years old. Put it right to use as is. I'm very satisfied with the stove. Easy to start and heats remarkably well. I put green logs in for overnight heat. Does build up creasote but I clean the chiminey often. A nice slow burn with hard wood and heats up quick with softer wood. It cut our wood consumption by 1/4 from our old pot belly stove. It's 2001 and I've just taken the stove apart to rebuild, clean, caulk, and paint. I'm very impressed with how easy it comes apart and reassembles. (I just purchased a Defiant Encore and rebuilt it for a bigger home. I had to grind and tap the old screws and bolts - what a pain) The Intrepid was such a breeze comparatively.
Small wood size. Have to clean ash daily. The front andirons are easily broken if you drop a log on it and very costly to replace. (Be careful putting the wood in)
Would get another for a small place. I thing it's a great stove.
