    Too Cold to cut oak?

Zero is my limit if there's much wind,-5 or so if its calm.Keep moving & you stay warmer.Mainly just to get outside for a few hours. Don't matter if I'm in the woods or in the backyard bucking/splitting/stacking...long as my hands & feet are warm I'm OK.When they get cold/wet I'm done for a few...

    Anyone try one of these?

For $277 I can buy either 1 to 3 more medium sized vintage Mac's, a sizeable chunk towards one of the rarer very large gear-drive monsters or a very good pair of calk boots with steel toes & chainsaw resistant sidewalls.....==c

    Anyone try one of these?

Brother sent me the link via nbcnews on facebook a few days ago.Asked me what I thought of it.Told him "I thought it was no more than a yuppie axe,an overpriced fancy gimmick." Noticed on the company video that it looks like straight grained pine or birch that is being split. Then brother said...

Newbie looking for advice for first small saw

Most mid sized to very large pro saws are much louder than smaller homeowner versions. And the engines can vary greatly in size - from 60cc to 122cc depending on the operator's needs.Where as most homeowner saws are generally 30 to 45cc range of displacement. One difference between a homeowner &...

Oak or Ironwood/hornbeam if the price is almost equal

European Hornbeam is a distant botanical cousin & grows much larger than the American one.2 feet diameter & 60-70 feet tall when allowed. One of the best woods for wooden mallets, handles for wood chisels,soles/bodies for wooden planes, drumsticks in Europe are made from this, similar to Hickory in...

Didja ever notice...how sweet locust wood smells, and how purdy cherry wood flames?

Never burned any Black Locust, but its distant cousin Honey Locust is very close in density/heat value & smells a little like clover honey, quite pleasant.Black Cherry is outstanding also, either for fuel,in the smoker & especially as cabinet/furniture/woodturning material when quality pieces are...

    Dolmar 6400

My 40 yr old restored Mac 125 (stock, not the 101B kart engine) has around 180 cold last I checked. You better use that decomp button unless you want to tear the starter off and/or break the rope & your fingers. 2100CD is 170+ & even the 288 after 25+ yrs of use is 165 give or take.

How many hours a year do you spend processing your firewood?

I try to get in the woods 2-3 days per month, year round.Guessing 100 hrs + in a year.Depending on weather & my work schedule.Anywhere from 10 degrees to 90 is OK for me.Only things that keep me away are temps over 90/under 0,high winds/lightning/thunderstorms or deep snow.Light rain or the...

Quick way to deal with those branches

I would love something like that for the smaller rounds.1" to 4" diameter branches/poles/saplings for kindling etc gets cut down with 25 yr old Delta cast iron miter saw.Much faster than any chain saw with its 1/8" kerf 40 tooth carbide tipped blade.

What is the one kind of wood that you wouldn't take if somebody payed you?

And the foliage/flowers/small twigs really stink in the summer also.I made sure that all the shavings/chips from the saws were raked up & dumped in the garbage cans, didnt want any more seeds sprouting elsewhere.Normally I save a little of the chips for mulch (except black walnut) around the...

Hedge (Osage orange)? What is it?

I'd say yes going by the bark, wood is spot on also. With what the temps have been lately here & in your neck of the woods, that's be a welcome sight to have for overnights if it was dry. Been years now but what I remember it dries fairly well - 12-18 months once split/stacked.

What is the one kind of wood that you wouldn't take if somebody payed you?

Ailanthus or Tree Of Hell. Back in March 2000 I had 2 very large & 1 medium sized removed from the property here in town.Didn't want to deal with the 2 biggest ones towering over my house & neighbor's & near all the power lines.Paid a local climber guy to piece them down to 30' or so,drop all...

I hear ya.... I've been around people like that. Not for very long however. My patience tends to wear thin quickly. Some people you just cant reach, even when the truth and/or facts are right in front of them. Starting when I was 17 until about 10 years ago it was Dad & I working together all the time when felling, bucking hauling etc.I did about 90% of the splitting & pretty much all of the stacking. He's 84 now & still likes to bring me some water, sharpen a chain for me or pick up a few smaller sticks...

    how fast does oak dry

80% of all the wood I cut year round is mixed standing dead or deadfall Oak/Hickory.Of that amount - roughly 70% is Red/Black Oak. I give it 12 to 18 months after splitting/stacking,with our strong winds that occur quite often throughout the year, its good to go then. What little "green" Oak I...

    How long to season hickory

lol I have tons of small stuff too.Main thing that helps me is 90% of all the mixed Oak/Hickory I cut year round is standing snags or deadfall so with average size splits or smaller rounds (4 to 6") it dries much faster,we have lots of wind here most of the year, really bad the past 3 weeks.The...

Chainsaw accident you need to see on Renovation Realities

Precisely. And to laugh about it afterwards & think its "f*^%$# awesome" shows how ignorant some people really are. Best things he could do is 1.Put that saw down before he kills himself or someone else.2.Sell it & use the money to hire a real pro who knows what they're doing.
