RE: Which option to choose with splitter repair?

Valves almost never fail. You can break them, such as retracting a split stick to the wedge into the valve (DAMHIKT), but they’re basically forever components at any consumer usage rate. Pumps are too cheap to even be a factor, and the frame is forever, unless you leave it uncovered outdoors...

When are you going to light your first fire for the season?

Had a few one-stove nights already, but tonight is our first two-stove night. All red oak, baby... it’s all I have in this wagon load!

I’ve not run an Ashford 25, but I’ve put about 40 cord thru a pair of Ashford 30’s over the last 4 years, and I have no issues making it 7 hours on all but the absolute highest settings. The range of settings on most BK models is about 3x wider than the actual useful range. Put otherwise, on my...

RE: Which option to choose with splitter repair?

Yeah, I think it is. The old design used a vertical shaft engine, which really limits engine options, and a custom pump mount welded into the engine mounting plate. I didn’t really look at the pump mount on the new design, but I suspect it’s the more standard cast mount that puts the pump...

Hey Nigel, I’m not going to say top down is bad, I really haven’t experimented with them to make any such conclusion. But I’ve put more loads thru my BK’s than any three average wood burners, and I’ve never had to resort to building a top-down fire to get one going, I’ve just always used the...

Ahh... okay. I misinterpreted what you were describing. So no air leak, control is fine. Going from a raging fire to shut down quickly can cause all sorts of issues in the firebox, the most exciting of them being back-puffing, when flammable wood gas is coming off the wood more quickly than the...

I wasn’t sure, so I just looked it up. Beam and frame are identical, but they changed the engine configuration.

This doesn’t sound like normal behavior at all, for a Princess. My first thoughts are air leak or extremely strong draft, although my Ashford 30 has no trouble remaining totally controllable on 30 feet of pipe, which really has me wondering if you have something preventing your stove from...

I have to admit I haven’t looked all that closely at them, since I bought mine a half dozen years ago, but isn’t the CountyLine just TSCs latest re-badging and paint job on the same Speeco-built splitters they used to sell in red paint under the Huskee brand name?

RE: Which option to choose with splitter repair?

$700? Really? I can’t remember ever seeing a decent splitter nearly that cheap. Best price I’ve ever seen on a Speeco 22 is $899.99.

    Drying in 4-row stacks

It was a lot of huge trees. [emoji3] This is the same property from which I took a 60” diameter downed white oak after Sandy. There were a lot of trees in the 24”+ range, this time. A ship builder took the white oak, gave us about $5k for the privilege to harvest what blew down. He sent in a...

Can firewood be dried faster set by the stove?

Corey, note the way the 140dF curve flattens out, long before you reach 20%. The OP didn’t state their starting point, but even a kiln at 140dF is going to take a long time (not 32 hours) to reach 20% from... say 30% starting temperature. Then note the difference between the various temperature...

How high did the probe spike? The steelcats can take quite a bit more abuse than the ceramics, but if it got hot you may have flattened or peeled some coating.

True 'dat. Each of my motor vehicles have been among the least advantageous economic decisions in my life... but they're a heck of a lot of fun! Here's an interesting thought exercise. The Tesla Model X Performance costs $108,490 cash deal without autodrive, without any interior upgrades...

    Stove sizing pre/post remodel

There’s a lot to be said for having something now, to learn about your needs, before you buy your “forever” stove. So, while it may sound expensive to buy and resell a stove for just a single year, it wouldn’t be all for naught. You will learn a lot about what you want to get out of a stove...

Tesla Model 3 Parked in Our Garage

One good argument @DBoon has been making, I think, is that any fixed portion of the bill should not be used in this particular comparison. You’re paying it anyway, whether you own an EV or not. So, while it’s part of your bill, it’s not part of figuring the differential cost of fueling an EV...

I suspect that graph must be generation only? I’m 8 cents “price to compare”, but the check I mail every month amounts to more like 19.5 cents per kWh.

I’m with Jags and peakbagger. There are many sources for cylinders of most of the designs common to big box store log splitters, and surpluscenter is a decent place to start that hunt.

    Tree splitting?

The same thing has been happening here, I lose three to five trees each year. But I’ve been planting 15 - 20 new trees each year, so I’m seeing a net increase. On a smaller scale, I’d just plan to plant a few new trees each year, as your budget and property dictate. I used to do bare root...

Geez... never been a problem, here. We just had over 200 cords of white oak and hickory blow down at my church this summer. Have we reached a tipping point?

No kidding: It feels a little disheartening, when most of my favorite cars come with a gas guzzler tax, and many private yachts or private jets burn more fuel in a single day than I can run thru all of my cars combined in a full year.

No problem. I can post some numbers tonight, it will be just re-running your math with the $.30/kWh rates a few others here have posted, along with their local gasoline prices. Again, I’m not disagreeing with your conclusion, the EV will almost alway be cheaper to fuel, I think I’ve been...

    first year new windows/doors throughout

Yeah, it’s fun thinking about it when I’m on a ladder at midnight, fixing a third floor window in a nor’easter after a 19-hour day. first year new windows/doors throughout

Yeah, we have the same issue with regard to empty space around the frame, but probably to less of a degree. My frames would have originally been mortared in, so zero draft. But the bedding mortar was just common mud, with no lime or cement (Portland hadn’t been invented yet), so between age and...

    Tree splitting?

That thing is so young and small, I’d be inclined to just remove it and start over. I have this issue with a 100 foot tall hackberry, which would take three generations to replace. I suspect that tree of yours will always be weak there, and with the proximity to the house, I’d just take it out...

I've been headed the opposite direction, rebuilding our 1770's original windows. In many cases, I'm finding I'm not the first to rebuild them, many of the frames seem to have been rebuilt in an 1890's or early 1900's renovation. I'm rebuilding or replacing the frames, restoring the sash, and...

    Tree splitting?

Common in some species. You can run a cable between the two branches, between 1/2 and 2/3 way between crack and maximum height, if you want to keep the tree. Typically done by drilling thru each half, thru-bolting an eye bolt in each branch, and then running a cable with eyes between them.
