Heat Pump w/Propane backup Condensing Furnace

That is a good idea. I've gone a step farther by switching off the A/C compressor and setting the thermostat to cool (fan only) when the upstairs gets warm and cut off when the upstairs cools too much. I think (know) it works ok, but the wife... On a mild day, 35F outsite, the bedrooms might...

Heat Pump w/Propane backup Condensing Furnace

Condensing and direct vent equipment are two different things. Your description make sense. (and I didn't know). pedantic is one of my favorite words. :) That's what I thought too! I looked into it a couple of years ago and they made it seem like a big deal. I'll check again. YES...

Heat Pump w/Propane backup Condensing Furnace

Yes. 40F outside air. There are dual fuel systems (heat pump & gas) in the market now. I was curious if they were worth the expense & if a direct vent version (venting using PVC) existed. I should probably find an HVAC forum... but the folks on Hearth.com are pretty sharp. Thanks!

Heat Pump w/Propane backup Condensing Furnace

Is there such a thing as Heat Pump w/Condensing Propane Furnace for backup (below 40f)? We really should replace our older Oil Furnace (ducted air) and older A/C. Rambler/ranch w/ finished basement in Northern Virginia. We heat mostly w/ our wood stove and don't use the basement much. It's too...

just got several loads of firewood for free i just had to cut and split

I'll burn pine. Pine burns fine. I come across yellow pine every now and then. I'd not go out of my way for it. Sycamore, green, is mostly water. When it does dry out, there is not much mass to burn left. Silver maple burns very quickly and makes so very much ash. Fluffy, dusty ash. When we...

Need Some Help. Neighbor (Environmental Atty) Filed Complaint

You're not wrong. I wish you were, but this is where our society is and because of this behavior, the public authorities will just make more laws in an effort to legislate manners which will give credence to more complaints. And around and around we go.

Most of the time, but there are several species that are better off left to rot. Couple to leave around here would be silver maple and sycamore.

Need Some Help. Neighbor (Environmental Atty) Filed Complaint

Such a civil world we live in. From the article about neighbors: "The men have never spoken to each other directly -- only through the Board of Health."

Do you store a stack of wood inside your home?

about a 1/4? cord on the porch (2 weeks), and the "wagon" inside (2 or 3 days).

While out cutting in the woods

I use a trailer and roll the big stuff up the ramps... then prop the ramp up so it's level and roll the rounds right on to the splitter. Rapid fire splitter by macattack_ga posted Jan 19, 2018 at 10:41 AMRapid fire splitter by macattack_ga posted Jan 19, 2018 at 10:41 AM

    Kinetic vs hydraulic

I got a deal in the DR (used via CL). I think I'd get the super split if I was buying new. How do I balance those rounds? With all my might, steel toed boots and significant caution. Those rounds in the pic are atypical. White Oak and heavy, but split nicely. I've built a wooden work table...

I have the DR and it has worked well. If I can get it on the table it will usually split it.

    Proving boiler safety (UL 2523)

Thanks stee6043: The language for the code with water heaters is a little different. "Solid fuel-fired boilers shall be listed and labeled in accordance with UL 2523" "Solid-fuel-fired water heaters shall comply with UL 2523". S.Whiplash: Previous owner got an OWB. Probably SOL... but an...

    Proving boiler safety (UL 2523)

I picked up an older indoor boiler for a song and would like to install it. Going through the reams of codes and requirements I've discovered that in my jurisdiction a boiler needs to be UL 2523 listed. Since this boiler was manufacture prior to the drafting of UL 2523.... guess what... it's...
