    Maple Syrup

Hi maple1. Yup, there is a problem there. It takes 1000 BTU per pound to convert hot water into steam. That's 8000 btu per gallon, not 1000. My e250 could boil about 30 gallons per hour. Physics has a way of sobering you up pretty rapidly. Your rig sounds really nice! How many trees...

Limit water velocity in copper pipe to 2 feet per second

It's very low. According to what I have read, copper is so soft at high temps that water can scour it (especially near joints, where there is more turbulence) causing failure.

    variable speed pump

TCaldwell, sounds like a great setup for your Garn. I use the same setup for my Woodgun- 3PH motor running the draft inducer fan (to my knowledge I am the only Woodgun currently in service running on a VFD.) Thanks for your help on choosing a pump for this application- still looking at several...

    variable speed pump

Doing a bit of research, March Pumps makes a 1HP (!!!) 3 phase pump. According to the manufacturer, this pump should be fully compatible with a VFD unit. A lot more $$$ than I had budgeted for a pump. TCaldwell, do you have any experience with ths 3PH pump or any other 3 phase? Andrew

Limit water velocity in copper pipe to 2 feet per second

Hi, Engineering Toolbox recommends limiting water velocity in a copper pipe to 2 feet per second if the temperature is above 140F. Does anyone follow this recommendation?? Andrew

    Propylene Glycol

I couldn't agree more on comments on glycol in syrup. Absolutely unacceptable. This is a research project, and the conclusion may very well be that it's a bad idea. Again, thanks all for you input!

    variable speed pump

It's a Stratus II unit made by control resources. Will output 110 220 or 3 phase. TACO does have several variable speed pumps (including the 0011), but I don't know what technology they use on them. Could just pull our their control board and control it directly..... Andrew

    variable speed pump

Hi, I'm needing a variable speed pump. I have a Variable Frequency Drive unit that I can use to drive 110 220 or 3 phase. The TACO 0011 is about the right size. Can I use my VFD on this pump? Does anyone know of a pump that runs well on a VFD or other speed controller such as a TRIAC...

    Propylene Glycol

Propylene glycol is edible. Really, though, if the glycol is getting into the syrup, that means a ruptured heat exchanger, and I have problems way beyond glycol in my syrup! Thanks all for the input, very helpful.

    Propylene Glycol

Thanks, that's excellent information. Is the high limit 300F?

    Propylene Glycol

Hi, I'm looking into a high temperature application for my Woodgun E250. I want to fill the boiler with about 80/20 propylene glycol to water mix. Then run it at 300F, circulating the hot glycol through pans to boil water. (Maple sap for a maple syrup operation.) Does anyone have...

    Maple Syrup

Maple1, I have a place to set up a liquid heat transfer pan right now, ready to go, with water and electric already in place. For a wood fired arch I'd have to build a new shed. It makes a lot of sense for me to look into this. Also, high pressure steam is out of reach for most syrup...

    Maple Syrup

Thanks, all for your input. I especially like the offer to give feedback on the syrup..... Like the ideas on efficient sap boiling.... was thinking starting this next season just boiling, then moving to RO or other efficiencies if I ever get more serious about things. boiling 3 gallons of sap...

    Maple Syrup

Hi All, Enjoying my E250 to heat my house and barn with a hydronic system. Liking it. But....... What if I used the E250's ability to product steam so that I could boil maple sap into maple syrup during maple season? The E250 is rated to 15 PSI of steam. Close hydronic system in Late...

    Controller for Woodgun

The VFW takes 200VAC and converts to 3 phase. I had Woodgun put a 3 phase motor on.

    Controller for Woodgun

Hello, I just installed a woodgun E250 in my shed to heat house and shed. Rather than use the standard controls, I built a controller based on an "arduino" style microprocessor controller. Basically a chip for those of us who don't understand C programming. It has a thermocouple to keep...

    Alternative to Woodgun

Hi, I've been running a woodgun E200 for 7 seasons- it's done great for me. Now I am building an outside garage that will take some heating, and I am moving the woodgun to this garage so I can get the mess and fire danger out of my house. Considering upgrading the e200 to an e250, but...
