    Wood pellets

Was going to get a hot water tank, but then I realized that if we ever had a problem with the pellet stove, we would still have the oil furnace as backup heat. So we still have it and we use it for our hot water. 150 gallons of oil per year for domestic hot water. Maybe.

    Wood pellets

my total cost for a newHarman P61A, all exhaust piping, side heat shields,OAK, plus pro install was around 4k. never did the math to see if it has finally paid for itself over past 5 yrs. we burn 24/7.. doesn't matter.... I love the steady heat that I cannot get from oil fired hot water...

    Ash question

same here.. a softwood snob.. prefer doug firs and the zilch ash.. don't mind spending a bit more since it is a product that lasts far into winter and not "Gone" overnight like a 100.00 meal or ticket to a sports event...lol

    Ash question

Firs will cost an average of 100.00 more a ton if you live on the east coast like we do.. I don't think that is a lot of money for something you will use all winter [as opposed to a 100.00 dinner that's gone in a few hours, tickets to one pro football or baseball game etc.. u get my...

you could also turn your exhaust blower on while you brush the heat exchanger too keep dust from escaping the stove.. don't know if your stove has a test mode like Harman which kicks it on..

Any way to determine good pellets? I am somewhat lost

3/half to 4 tons.. after shoulder season[off/on] we begin 24/7 burning around late November, early December.. I do also burn EasyBlaze super premo softwoods which are almost as hot as the firs for 1st couple months.. usually around mid October here it's time for some heating at least overnight.

Any way to determine good pellets? I am somewhat lost

Oil furnace heats up the baseboard, then cools down, heats up,rinse/lather/repeat. Stove is constant heat 24/7 blowing.our house is not well insulated so the furnace would drink oil like a drunken sailor to keep downstairs at 74 degrees. Stove keeps it toasty warm for almost what oil would...

    Is extra cost worth it?

I have burned all three brands in the past. They all produce very good Heat. Hamers produce just as much ash now as energex so I would go with the energex for 40 less if those are your choices.

Any way to determine good pellets? I am somewhat lost

Okay I admit. I am a soft wood snob. And I'm willing to pay extra for pellets that produce very little Ash. I have burned all the lower-priced stuff at box stores and I'm just tired of all the ash. I have no problem paying $100 more a ton for Douglas firs. I have friends who spend that much...

Any of the above will work. I dont dissconnect anything. Vaccum it good, spray the burnpot with pam cooking spray and put a box of damrid inside.i do empty the hopper out or burn them if not much in there. You will see if rust streaks are visable next season in the burn chamber or not.
