2019-20 Blaze King Performance Thread Part 1 (Everything BK)

If the draft of your setup is strong enough, dialing the t-stat all the way down will not let the cat go out of the active range. You’d be “riding the hole” as they say. Once the cat is engaged and active, leave the bypass closed. You’ll find with use and experience that “sweet spot” on the dial...

What to do with fallen pines?

Years, literally. I only burn pine and spruce, and my house is just as warm as if I were burning the finest hardwoods. Add the fast drying and ease of splitting in the equation, the fact that it’s free and near your home makes it an excellent candidate for the wood stove... just a thought

2019-20 Blaze King Performance Thread Part 1 (Everything BK)

It should. There must be air entering the insert. If you already checked the door seal and the glass seal and they are both in working order, with the t stat as low as it can go you should see no flames at all within a few minutes (or some lazy secondaries for an half hour); moreover a full load...

    Neighbor complaint of smoke odor

There is a ceramic for Sirocco, but it’s only 50$ less than the steel one. Moreover, the OP stove came out of the factory with a steel cat (like mine did). Steel cats are less prone to damage, and they turn active quicker than ceramic... with complaining neighbors, the faster the stack plume...

    Neighbor complaint of smoke odor

Well, the new cat will do its part, but going from 13 to 17 feet will improve draft. You’ll probably be able to turn the t-stat down a bit more than usual while still keeping the cat active. And show your neighbors you actually did something. To my eye, it’s an overall improvement of your...

    Neighbor complaint of smoke odor

I am confident the new cat will improve the situation for sure. Did you order a ceramic or steel?

    Neighbor complaint of smoke odor

I would add a section of pipe and install a new cat, just to be on the right side. You’re a 24/7 burner and after 5 years the cat might be approaching the end of its life (roughly 10.000 hours). Just my 0.02$

BKs are awesome in burning softwoods. If packed full, with BIG splits of spruce and pine, my Ashford can go beyond the advertised 30 hrs mark in warm (0 C outside) weather.

Wanting to learn about my new stove

IF it was built by a master tile stove builder, the plastered tiles should be either on the sides or the top of the stove. You should be able to identify the removable tiles by looking closely at the borders: while concrete is light grey, plaster is yellowish white. Work patiently around the...

Wanting to learn about my new stove

Ah, tile stove is the correct term. It is very common not only in Germany, but in all so-called Mitteleurope (Austria, Czech Republic, Slovenia etc). Yes, it’s the kind of mass stove I was referring to in my previous post. If you look closely, there should be some tiles (usually on the sides)...

Thanks @weatherguy ... gosh 112.27$ for shipping and import fees. But it seems I have no choice, cat stoves being almost unknown ‘round here. Oh well, with all the wood I save each season, I can afford to spend that much.

Wanting to learn about my new stove

I agree, the stove is beautiful. It’s a mass stove, very common where I live. Take a look, if possible because most have small loading doors, inside the stove. If it’s a proper mass stove, you should see a “ceiling” 20 inches or so above door. If it’s a lookalike mass stove, it is empty (i.e...

With the door closed and the thermostat on low I’m pretty sure heat loss trough the stove is negligible if not completely non existent. Heat loss from windows, doors, walls etc is surely more important.

On a more serious side, my minimum setting is a little more than 3 o’clock in shoulder season, a little less when it’s really cold outside. But there are other variables, most important (for my setting) is split size: bigger splits need a bit more air.

Some smoke after reloading is pretty normal. If it disappears in 3 or 4 meters and is white, it’s steam (or, at least, the vast majority of what you see is steam). Do you live in a regulated smoke area?
