What is the highest price you would pay for a wood stove?

Is your "cheap" comment in reference to price, construction, or both? I replaced my 30 year old trouble-free Osburn with a new 2020 Drolet that looks to have the same build quality. I swapped out the old stove in about an hour and the new stove performed flawlessly this first season. Can you...

    Insulation

Thanks for the reference begreen. This was installed on our home by previous owner. If I am interpreting the code correctly, this restriction would not apply if you had an external air supply duct installed on your stove.

I took a look at the California Residential Building Codes (chapter 10) and NFPA 211 and did not find anything. Do you have a more specific section in mind that I could look at? Thanks.

If you have room, consider a forced air system. I have a register just above my stove that is connected to a simple squirrel cage blower. The blower pulls air from above the stove and distributes it to other rooms in the house using flexible ducting.

What is the highest price you would pay for a wood stove?

Looked at several EPA 2020 stoves at the beginning of the year. Ended up spending $1,050 on a great heater that I am confident will last several decades. The aesthetics are just fine and I am using the money I saved on other home projects.

Hmm, might try original plan first.

    Disconnecting double wall chimney pipe

Okay, I will give the Stove Bright a try and see how it applies and looks. The nice thing about this solution is I don't have to wait until the season is over to paint the pipe.

    Disconnecting double wall chimney pipe

My setup looks very similar to yours, just pilot holes and no screws (I have more dust also ). I may try just carefully twisting connection to see if it comes loose.

    Disconnecting double wall chimney pipe

I have a can of stove paint from SBI that I thought I would use. It would be a perfect match with the stove. I don't see any screws at the top connection, although there does appear to be pilot holes for them. Perhaps it is just pushed on? I have no idea who manufactured the pipe. The...

    Disconnecting double wall chimney pipe

After installing my new stove I noticed my 1988 double wall pipe between the stove and ceiling needs a new coat of paint . I want to take care of that this summer but need to know how to disconnect the double wall pipe at the ceiling/ triple wall connection. I don't see any screws so it is not...

Old fireplace with 4 vents at corners. Can I mount a TV above it?

Another way to think about this is in terms of a moment (torque). At 80 lbs. and a 2.5 foot (30") moment arm, you end up putting a 200 ft-lb torque at the mount base plate that bolts to your wall. Just like attaching a torque wrench to your base plate and setting it to 200 ft-lbs and pulling...

Old fireplace with 4 vents at corners. Can I mount a TV above it?

Most LED TVs are rated to 40 degrees C (104 F) maximum ambient air temperature. This is true for most indoor microprocessor-based devices. I would measure the air temperature just below where the TV will be mounted with the fireplace burning at a typical rate. If hot air comes out of those...

    Over burning/over draft

This is from the FAQ on the PE Support page: Should I use a flue damper? Flue dampers can be considered in situation with excessive draft, consult with your local pacific energy Dealer before making any modifications. If the dealer can't help you with this, I am sure one of the guys in this...

Stainless steel or galvanized steel cable for chimney cleaner setup

Not quit sure I understand your setup, but another possibility might be Kevlar rope. Here is a link to information on that product: http://www.pelicanrope.com/fireandescape-rope.html#KEVLAR%20AP

    2020 and retailers

In the People's of Republik of Kalifornia things can be challenging. In my county, you cannot sell your home with a non-compliant (to current EPA standards) stove installed. It must be removed and destroyed. I decided to replace my old burner now so at least I could enjoy it a bit instead of...

Flame Monaco XL Install - Ceiling Clearance Concerns

I think sticking to their tested and approved configurations makes the most sense. You wouldn't want an unsafe installation, and you certainly don't want to give your insurance company an excuse not to cover you in the event of a loss.

Flame Monaco XL Install - Ceiling Clearance Concerns

Just went through finding a replacement stove to go in our brick alcove that would meet the clearances we have. In the end, there were not that many stoves that could meet the clearances I have available. SBI is really good about giving detailed information on clearances and things you can do...

    Sometimes it all comes together

Woke up to a nice coal bed as well this morning and the family room, kitchen, and office at 75 degrees (only about 40 outside). With a cup of coffee in hand, it's a relaxing morning.

    Your favorite wood

I would go with the oak. We burn plenty of it in NorCal, but my very favorite is almond. Seasons quickly, burns hot and long, leaving a great coal bed to get a new fire going in the morning.

    variable speed HVAC fan

You need to be very careful about using a variable speed motor on your heat pump. If you do want to use your system as a heat pump, it is critical that the motor speed runs at the same rpm as the OEM motor. If you run the motor at a slower RPM when using the unit as a heat pump, you can damage...

    New to me 2009 Osburn 2400 Insert/restoration

Wow, what a fun project you have for this summer. I look forward to seeing your posts. I have been running SBI products for 20 years now and am very happy with the build quality and performance of the units I have owned. Since you have the insert torn down, I would advise replacing any worn...

Cannot Keep Fire Lit in Fireplace

Recently stayed at a nice B&B in Mendocino CA and our room had a zero clearance fireplace with a nice supply of newspaper, kindling, and nicely split small pieces of wood. That coastal weather really creates a challenge for having dry wood. Had no problem getting the kindling burning and...

How am I going to get the stove in position

Just installed a Drolet Escape 1800 (a little over 300 lbs.) onto a raised hearth using a refrigerator hand truck with my son-in-law. Also used it to remove the old stove. Took our time and it only took about an hour to swap the units.

Finally replaced my Osburn Regent 1500

I will give this a try. I think this smoke problem has a lot to do with the stove's ability to keep the heat in the Firefox better. Speaking of blowers, I have never had one in the 40 years I have been heating my homes with wood. Are they a worthwhile investment?

Finally replaced my Osburn Regent 1500

Yes, I have noticed the stove getting hotter when I reduce the air intake and can see the secondary combustion. I get much more beautiful fires with this new stove. I am having a bit of trouble not getting smoke in the room when I open the door to add wood or remove ash. I think I may be...

Finally replaced my Osburn Regent 1500

I wanted to replace our 1988 Osburn Regent 1500 with an EPA 2020 certified stove. I was always very happy with the performance of the Osburn and leaned strongly towards the Osburn 2000. After a little research I changed my mind and went with the Drolet Escape 1800. I think it is basically the...
