Is it?? How many different batteries for different power tools does the government own??? This could be single greatest cost savings measure DOGE has presented to date and while we’re all for standardization let’s just rip that bandaid off and adopt the metric system. We can use the battery tool savings to pay for. Think of the increased productivity and efficiency of the average American!

If it wasn’t, it should be. Think of all the millions of sets of power tools already owned. As we all know, batteries do not last forever. When the owners of all these sets need to buy replacement batteries, and can not get them for their older specific set, all these millions of sets of power tools will be worthless.

Yes but very profitable if you sell batteries or tools or own stock in companies that do.

Most of the batteries are probably sourced from the same spot in China anyways…

I’m pretty sure the battery rebuilder companies don’t have a massive stockpile of inventory for each manufacturer of power tools.

The cells inside battery packs are standard. It's the housing and interface that varies. I suspect that the cells in the battery packs also come graded for quality too. I have had my Makita 18v lithium batteries for 12 yrs and they are still strong performers. Good cells in those packs.

yes it would be nice if they were a universal thing.. Even found the same manufacturer like Mastercraft use different battery's between their lines, went out and purchased all new cordless tools in both their maximum and standard line only to find out when i got home the battery's were not compatible with each other, took everything back. While they do make adapters that just ads weight and length to the tool.
