I have a legacy Jotul system 18. This is a fireplace "system". It is a little more than an "insert" in that it is designed from the "ground up".
There is no secondary burn technology in this system but when I have it firing well, I do get a dark orange rolling flame above the main fire and I suspect this to be secondary burn since I only see this when the fire is quite hot. Is this an over- firing condition for such an old system?
The chimney contains a corrugated SS liner that specs out at a 1000 deg F operating, and 1400 deg F intermittent (Z-flex liner). There are no baffles between the flames and the liner, which is mounted to a cone enclosing the top.
I would hate to fry the liner since it is an expensive "hell job" to replace it, involving smashing through a brick wall as a warm up.
Opinions, advice welcome.
