burning a vc vigilant as a fireplace?

I have VC Encore and have not had good luck with the fireplace method. If there is a good bed of coals the fire gets going to fast. If there isn't enough coals the fire doesn't burn well and things start to get cold. We have done it a few times, but it takes some work.

It is much less efficient, easy to over fire the stove, stove pipe temps might be lower due to all the cold air. I would guess creosote increases with the high volume of air and moisture.

But some times it is nice to look at...or make smores.
