Can wall protectors be built just like hearth pads? wood, durock, tile? or is the wood backer to hold the flimsy durock unacceptable?

If you use any combustible material in the construction of a wall shield, you invalidate it and start over with CTC's from the shield to the appliance & stovepipe. No wood. Nada. Non-combustible materials only. Rick

Need to know what you are trying to accomplish first, and hello neighbor.

So... why are you building a heat shield? Sounds like you are using double wall pipe, and it will be 6-7" from combustibles. Just slap some lath mortar and stone on the wall and be done with it.
