It happens sometimes. Picked up a free trailer load of 2 yr seasoned cherry. Some punky some not. Going to cross stack it in the sun, probably be ready for this season.

Just came on from cuttin' up a similar load, scavenged from the in-laws. They have many acres of green-wood supply and are a few years ahead in seasoned wood, so they ignore standing dead. They reject, I gladly accept!

Did the same thing late last summer: cut, split, and stacked loose in direct sun for a month or so. Even the slightly punky stuff dried right up and burned great. Didn't use a drop of oil last winter.

gzecc nice deal punky or not, you still have some free btu's. We burned some punky beech early on last year, took the chill off.
