So I don't have access to a Mahnehelic Gauge and need to set my damper position. Any pointers?

Does this need to be adjusted with different fuel types?

The mag is the best way to get it set to factory spec IMHO. But you can get very close with flame inspection and ash color.

You will be too rich if your flame has black tips, Pull the damper rod out/open more. But not so you have a blow torch like flame. If your ash on the door glass is black its a bit too rich and needs more air. Light gray is good.

You can find the mags on ebay for cheap. I think I only paid like $30 bucks for mine. But even with the mag I still watch my ash color and flame.
