Went up to inspect the flue today (only have had maybe five fires so far the season) and noticed a gloss like sheen of cresote. Last winter burned all season with no cap and had your usual build up but nothing glossy. So my question is....is the cap causing the smoke to slow down just enough to cote the flue???? I still have a strong draft, just doesnt make sense that a cap would cause the glossy build up ?

cap-S.S with expanadable steal sides
wood-all seasoned-12-20 months
stove-VC vigilant with burn temp of 550 in damper down mode

Any help would be appreciated

Nothing to be stumped about if the sote is collecting on the cap. A cold air cooled piece of metal that the stuff hits on its way out. It is gonna stick to it. Is there any/more in the top flue tile than usual?

Cooler fall burning? Have you had the stove fully up to temp?
