Was at a university research lab and they had been hired to develope presto type logs using hay.
Since ground up hay has no binder they were playing with different % of binders.
Ultimately they want to make pellets with it.
Saw them do a trial burn with the presto log and it burned for ~6 hrs
 
Yes, hay is a viable option for making pellets using the smaller home sized units IF you use the correct binder and have the moisture content in range. Your stove needs to be able to handle the much higher levels of ash though and don't expect as much heat output.
