I'm thinking elm ??

Found this laying out in the woods with no bark or leaves, and I'm not sure what it is. It sure looks a lot like elm to me ? What do ya'll think ?

Elm. Probably red.

Not often you find splits in the woods :)
 
Well, did some research on Dutch elm disease..... no doubt it's some species of elm after looking at the pictures. 15% moisture content fresh off the forest floor, I'll take it !!!

And that dead elm burns much better than the stuff you cut green. It even splits better.
