When my Vermont Castings Intrepid II is not running, I wonder what kind of heat loss occurs. Even with the damper closed, doesn't warm air escape through the stove anyway?
 
Keep the damper closed and the primary air lever shut.
Heat loss will be minimal (through secondary combustion air intake hidden in back and at cracks around primary air level adj. to flue pipe).
