Is it necessary to have a gasket between the stove pipe and where it hooks into the stove?

I have a smokey smell in the basement but have sealed the pipe farily well. I do not have a gasket between the pipe and where it hooks up to the stove. I'm thinking this is the issue that is causing the smokey smell.

Comments please....

Most installs call for silicone at the stove adapter. You can also try the flashlight test with lights off during stove startup to help find the smoke.
