I have 5 1/2 tons of pellets in my attached garage, is it a fire hazard?
 
I wouldn't think so. Pellets need positive air flow to burn well, try and light a pile with a lighter. Now if you burn the garage down, I would think the pellets would add to the fun a bit, but not the pellets causing a fire.
 
I know that a very large pile of coal can and will self-ignite, but I've never heard of pellets doing this.

Yes, it's safe. Just keep it dry or it may be taking another parking space.

And I had 3 tons in my cellar bin once.
