Just hooked up my Black Bear, it's working great so far - still breaking it in. But reading the posts on this site (which are really helpful), I realize I should get a thermometer for it. My question is, what's the best one to get and where is the best place to put it on the stove?

As always, thanks in advance!

Lots of discussions on the low quality of cheap stove thermometers in other threads here. If you have a good budget, go for a TelTru. If not, Condar sells stove top models. No guarantees, but I picked up a Drolet model for a friend and it checked out within about 5% using my IR thermometer. Made in China and looks exactly like this one: http://www.blackswanhome.com/product/magnetic-woodstove-thermometer Note that this is a flue thermometer and the burn ranges are for when it is used on a single-wall flue pipe. But temps are temps and it's ok for stovetop use, just ignore the ranges.

Here is some chat on the subject:

Try it on the center of the hot plate.
