SARANAC LAKE - Saranac Lake Central School District officials expect installation of a high-efficiency biomass wood boiler at the Petrova elementary and middle school to begin sometime soon.
The district's Board of Education agreed earlier this month to accept a $479,900 bid for the purchase and installation of the boiler from B-S Industrial Contractors Inc. of Governeur. The biomass system will supplement the existing oil-fueled boilers at the school.
"The work will start ASAP," said Dan Bower, the district's assistant superintendent for business. "Now that we've awarded the bids, they're going to get going as soon as possible."
It has been estimated that the boiler could cover about 70 percent of Petrova's heating needs while saving the district $40,000 a year in fuel costs.
Superintendent Gerald Goldman said the amount of money the district will save will fluctuate.
"It depends on the price of fuel oil, the price of wood pellets and the temperature," he said. "But we figured there's going to be a significant savings."
The wood pellet boiler will also prolong the life of the building's oil-fueled boilers, which the district won't have to use as much.
"They're pretty old, but they're in pretty good shape and the longer we can keep them that way, the better," Goldman said.
School officials used a state grant several years ago to study the costs and benefits of installing a wood pellet boiler. That study helped the village secure $361,513 in federal stimulus money for the project, which was awarded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority in October 2009. Bower said the district also set aside $132,000 of its own money for the project in the 2011-12 budget.
Goldman said the district has amended its grant application to NYSERDA to ask for additional money to offset those costs, and has been told that the request has a good chance of getting approved.
The boiler will be attached to the outside of the building in a fenced in area next to the Petrova gym. A silo will be located in the same site to house the wood pellets. Goldman said the district will solicit bids for the pellets soon. He noted that there's a wood pellet manufacturing facility not far away, in Massena.
"We're optimistic that thing is going to be, for the most part, finished before school starts," Goldman said. "We might have some outside work to do, but it's not going to get in the way of anything going on in school."
The wood pellet boiler is one of two recent energy-efficiency projects at the school. New windows were installed in the Petrova building last summer, which Goldman said has helped to reduce the school's energy costs.
