Question:

We are building a stone fireplace and are looking for a weathered beam for a fireplace mantel - approx 8' long - 4-8" wide We'd appreciate any suggestions in locating this item. Local searches in CT have not been successful. Thanks J&E

Answer:

I used to have some great ones I pulled out of old barns. Check with demolition guys or old house restoration places. Many lumber yards have catalogs where one can order "barnwood" and other new lumber aged to look like old lumber. If all else fails- get a new 4x8 and beat it with hammers- chains- etc (no kidding) - then stain it..it'll look good if you beat it enough
