We started out looking at vent free gas logs, thank God our research steered us clear of them.
What scared you away from vent-free?

Hi Fueldude,
When we started looking for something to put into our firebox we looked at the vent free log sets. They looked terrific and were something like 95% rated for efficency.
The more dealers we went to and the more research we did on vent free anything indicated that they were a health hazzard.
Many states have banned there use and many dealers won't even sell anything that is vent free because of this.
Also, we have had many dealers, sales people, and technicians tell us that not only are they a health hazzard, but they could lead to severe condensation inside your home and discoloration of your painted walls.
We had friends that that a un-vented NG Stove that swore that they loved it and never had any problems. Eveytime we visited them,(they owned a log home),the stove was never on. About a year later, they moved this unit on to their screened in porch and bought a Direct Vent Jotul NG Stove.
Having a vent free product is no different ,IMO, than moving your gas grill from the patio or deck into the living room and using it.
It just not good for your health, but many of them are efficent and some owners swear by them.
